Keystone Insider’s Tip: Best Ski Runs for December 2010
The Keystone Insider Tips are provided by the expert staff (and expert skiers and riders) at the ResortQuest Ski and Sport Rental Shop. Make sure you get the best gear from the most knowledgeable team in Keystone!
The Keystone Ski Area is a great resort that hosts a wide variety of terrain that caters to all levels of skiers and boarders! From fun rolling groomers and soft greens to difficult moguls and back country like terrain Keystone is a mountain that will keep everyone entertained!
Best Ski Runs for December
- Beginner (Green) Spring Dipper is a green run that’s fun for all skill levels with softer flatter terrain. There are a few little rollers that are fun to ski on and maybe do some little tricks. Snow coverage is great and there are no bald or thin spots on this run.
- Intermediate (Blue) Paymaster is a blue run that is fun for the intermediate skier/boarders. It also has many little rollers due to the snow making in progress. It is a steeper run with less people so you have the run to yourself. It’s a great run if you want to gear it up a notch.
- Advanced (Black) Windows is a black run that is great for the experts! Windows winds through the trees, and even when there isn’t fresh powder, you’ll be able to find awesome stashes of knee deep snow. We do suggest caution when riding in these early season conditions. Because the base is not very deep yet (its only December) there is a chance of hitting logs/rock/debris that could jump out and get ya!
Get to Keystone and decide if you agree with our Local Experts recommendations! When you book lodging anytime during December (including Holidays!!!) with us at ResortQuest Breckenridge or Keystone you will save 40% off!!!

Early Ski Season at A-Basin- the locals tell all!
Employees of ResortQuest Steamboat couldn't wait for the first run of the season so they headed to Arapahoe Basin to camp out in the parking lot for the best first tracks.
We of course recommend a nice warm bed to sleep in but some like it cold! See our lodging deals- get lodging deals for Breckenridge or Keystone- just minutes away from A-basin!
(Written by Will Stone- ResortQuest Steamboat) "My friends and I set out to Arapahoe Basin to get our first tracks of the year! We set out to camp in the parking lot then wake up and catch some fresh early tracks. We took a brief stop in Dillon, CO where we met some co-workers for dinner at the Damn Brewery . Our co-workers were on their way to Breckenridge for Breckenridge Ski Resort's opening day and were staying at River Mountain Lodge. After dinner we headed up Loveland Pass to Arapahoe Basin. We parked and were the only people up there. After several hours of hanging out by the camp fire, we headed to bed for our beauty sleep till the morning!
I moved the truck around 730am in the morning to Arapahoe’s famous “Beach” parking lot. We soon got ready and headed to the cafeteria for some food the quickly to the slopes. Wow it was cold. The mountain was open top to bottom and we were surprised at the amount of coverage the mountain had open. Colorado really has a lot of snow for this time of year and it is only going to get better. We made lots of runs before the crowds started to build up so we took a break to let them settle down before resuming. After skiing all day we headed down to the lodge to have some their “World Famous” Bloody Mary’s. Yum, these are half the reason I go here, besides the great terrain and super nice people. By the end of the day we were knackered and headed home. The snow was falling on Rabbit Ears pass near Steamboat and hasn’t stopped since then!!! Perfect first tracks..."
If you are dying to get some powder you better head to Breckenridge or Keystone! Both resorts are open and have received massive amounts of snow over the past few days- Breckenridge is reporting 35" in the last 7 days and Keystone has been covered with 24" in the past 7 days. Breckenridge Ranked #8 Ski Resort for 2010
Ski Magazine has released their 2010 ski resort rankings and Breckenridge Ski Resort has come in at the top of pack at #8 out of 30 infamous ski resorts!
So what makes Breckenridge so awesome? Readers from Ski Magazine said, "Breckenridge is a polarizing place. Its wind-scoured steeps and miles of beginner terrain inspire heated reactions, both positive and negative—sometimes even from the same person. “I have a love-hate relationship with Breck,” says one reader. “I hate the road in, and Peak 7 is a nightmare. But when it snows, all the hassles float away.” Not surprisingly, Breck’s always-busy Main Street receives high marks for its après scene (No. 6) and off-hill activities (No. 7).

Travel Tips to Breckenridge: What to Pack?
So you are headed to Breckenridge! Congrats- you’ve booked your lodging and ski tickets and now all you have to do is pack… It doesn’t have to be a daunting chore but actually fun and quite simple. You don’t have to bring the whole closet just remember to pack light and you can always wear the same sweater twice- we are a relaxed town here to have fun!
Have you booked your Breckenridge Vacation yet? Book by Nov.1 and save up to 35%!
Here are a few things to remember when packing:
High Altitude:
Dress for the Weather: Breckenridge sits at 9,600 feet so the temperatures and weather conditions can change quickly. Dress in layers and dress for cooler temperatures. We recommend having base layers (the layers of clothing that are closest to the body) be wool. Try Smartwool or Icebreaker- wool breathes so moisture is wicked away. This means that if you begin to sweat your clothes will take away that moisture leaving you warmer! Also try to bring a jacket that is also wind proof.
Sunburn = Vacation Bummer: The sun is significantly stronger at high altitude and it reflects off the snow so we suggest you always wear at least 30spf sunscreen. Have good sunglasses and a chapstick that has an spf.
Altitude Sickness: Perhaps as many as half the visitors from lower elevations experience some form of altitude illness. The vast majority of resolve as the body acclimatizes. Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath with minimal exertion, nausea, headache and sleep disturbances. These symptoms are often worse the second day at altitude (but resolve in four to five days). Rest and drinking plenty of water is the key to treating mild forms of altitude sickness.
Here is the Essentials packing list:
- Shoes / boots with good traction and Snowshoes
- Goggles and sunglasses
- Camel back / water bottle
- Scarf / hat / gloves
- Warm layers (sweatshirts / long sleeve t-shirts / long underwear)
