Breckenridge has 5 inches of fresh powder, topping of a a week of 20 inches of new snow. A fantastic mid-mountain base of 26" greeted holiday skiers and riders with some of the best Thanksgiving conditions in years. But more is on the way. Forecasters predict another 5 to 9 inches beginning Tuesday through late-week, just in time for the first weekend of December. As ski season approaches, we're getting flurries in Georgia — in the form of dispatches from the Western ski resorts with what's new and improved on the slopes. Most of the resorts are opening in mid to late November. Getting there will be easier as Delta Air Lines has expanded its service to include 11 ski destinations in the western United States and Canada. Delta has added service to Telluride, Colo., and nonstop service to Steamboat, Colo., as well as expanded service to Aspen, Vail and Denver, Colo.; Jackson Hole, Wyo.; Bozeman, Mont.; and Sun Valley, Idaho.

The U.S. Ski Team and Keystone have reached agreement on a new relationship that will allow the team exclusive early season training privileges on North Peak. Finding training venues often has been a challenge for the team in the weeks leading up to World Cup races in Aspen and Beaver Creek. The new agreement eliminates the uncertainty of the past and allows the team to consolidate all of its training at one venue.

SILVERTON SET TO OPEN WITH 4 FEET OF NATURAL SNOW, SkiRacking.com, 10/19/06

Ski Area in Colorado is prepared to open early with four feet of natural snow. Several snowstorms have hit the area since Sept. 22 and have piled up as much as 48 inches of snow base. More than a foot of snow fell on the mountain on Tuesday. With just a bit more snow, Silverton Mountain will be able to open for the season.

People are waxing skis, sharpening edges and tightening bindings. The recent wet weather has outdoor enthusiasts “juiced” for the upcoming winter season. Jeans Westerner Service Manager Eric Barningham is excited too. He has seen a steady stream of customers recently. They are looking at new snowboards, buying jackets and dusting off old equipment.

PROPOSED SKI PARK HITS ZONING SNAG

A proposed ski area northwest of this historic mining town met some resistance Wednesday when county planners declined to support a rezoning request for the site near St. Mary's Glacier. An investor group led by Michael Coors, a descendant of the founder of the Golden brewery empire, wants to open Eclipse Snow Park on about 300 acres of land that must be rezoned for commercial outdoor recreation.
